Remember our booger green Guest Bedroom, on the left? It's been reborn, right.

We painted it Behr Cotton Whisper in Satin on the walls. Behr Moon Rise in Semi-gloss is on the trim.

Linens are from Horchow, Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Potterybarn and Target. The rug was a (never used!) score from an estate sale. The planter, vintage checkerboard, and antique books are from various shops in Fort Lauderdale.

The bed is from Zen Living, a boutique in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea that specializes in foreign antiques. The lighting is a Sharpie special (bonus points if you remember my little secret).

The antique typewriter (which actually works!) was a gift from Frecklehead. He spotted me lusting after it when we visited a local dealer and surprised me with it for Christmas. He even wrapped it himself in a moving box. With blue painter's tape. I looove it. Last year he got me a how-to knitting book when I was going through my whole oh-sh$&-I-resigned-from-my-job-what's-this-thing-called-relaxing phase. Which was awesome. So he's pretty much 2 for 2 in the Santa department.

Once the dust settled, though, they saw the method to my madness. Or maybe just my madness.

The frames are either old ones that weren't being used or were purchased from Walmart. They're filled with vintage Fort Lauderdale postcards (used as seating cards at our wedding), historic photos of Florida, our letterpress wedding invitation, and a (reproduction) map of Florida and Cuba from 1591.
The framed sketch on the right is from Tina Steele Lindsey, an artist I admire. She was gracious enough to send me that beautiful drawing after I inquired about her work, writing that it was "only an example of white on black..." I haven't been able to stop looking at it. It inspires me. Andrew and I are saving our pennies so that we can purchase a piece from her. If you buy one first, I'll hate you. But send me pictures.

So now that you've seen a few photos, you're probably thinking, That room is really small, aren't you? Well, yes, it is. So small, in fact, that Andrew and The Bestie laughed at me when I told them that I was going to fit a queen size bed and a desk into it. They didn't argue with me. They just laughed.
Once the dust settled, though, they saw the method to my madness. Or maybe just my madness.
Here's another shot of that scary ceiling and crown moulding before they were scraped and removed.

Very pretty, Kelly! Maybe your found drawer pulls should go on the desk?? They could also be really nice mounted in a shadow box.
Oh, and I want that nude beach box!!!
;)
I like the idea of a shadow box!
As crazy as this sounds, I'd considered adhering them to a wall and using them to hang jewelry from...
I really enjoyed reading this post and seeing all the photos...the room is absolutely good enough for a guest! Love the angle of the photo shot from above the desk and chair directly down. Funny to think about how you got all these photos.
Janell
Actually, I have a funny little story about that picture, Janell...
I took it by standing on top of the desk and looking down. If you look really closely you can see my toe (I had white socks on) at the edge of the photo.
Anyway, right after I got my shot I managed to slip from the desk onto the floor -- catching my kneecap on the edge of the seat of the chair.
It hurt.
A lot.
And now it's swollen and purple. Like, REALLY swollen.
I swear, I'm like a walking accident.
I think I would gladly stay in your beautiful guest bedroom. Loving the typewriter.
What a beautiful space... again, that bed was sooo worth all of the troubles!
I think you would have a hard time getting guests to leave! :-) Great job.
What a lovely makeover! I am a huge fan of canopy beds-- and yours looks great with the fabric swagged over it!!
your guest room is LOVELY! I really really like your bedframe it is very Zen -
Thanks! It's one of my favorite pieces of furniture...
WOW!! You did such a great job with such a small space. It's gorgeous. :) So serene...the perfect place for guests to stay. You better watch out, or they might not want to leave. ;) Thanks for the visit!
Thanks, Amanda. I figured if I didn't make the space properly USABLE then buyers (or renters) would have a difficult time seeing the potential. I was determined to NOT make it our office or sitting/storage area, since that's all most people would end up thinking of it as. Hopefully, now they'll see it as cozy and charming rather than cramped and closet-like. I wanted to show that at least it's large enough to be comfortable. Well, that was the plan, anyway...
Thanks so much for stopping by {with grace & lace}!! The best part of that is that now I found YOUR blog! Before & Afters of remodels are basically my very most favorite thing so I'm already in love! Your guest would be very lucky to stay in that suite!
Wow this is beautiful! What a HUGE difference. How serene and peaceful. I love how every detail was paid attention too down to the knobs on the door. And the nude beach box is toooo cute! The rug has to be the best find. I love it. Oooh and the billowy look of the linens on the bed with the light glowing through it! Swoon. Totally. such a functional and beautiful space.
I love it! Your guests are never going to want to leave :)
Awww, thanks Sweet Maple and Adrianna.
We've been so tempted to camp out in there ourselves since our master isn't done yet...
I am so glad you stopped by my blog or I may not have found yours. I love what you are doing here. I've always wanted to buy a house that needed major work and fix it up to re-sell. My husband tells me to have a good time, he won't be helping!
That's hilarious, Karen! I'm glad you enjoy the blog.
Believe it or not, a lot of the properties I've bought were sold "turn-key". I generally look for the best financial purchase and then improve the things I don't enjoy and/or what prevented the property from quickly selling or renting. A lot of times when homes need MAJOR work they tend to actually not be the best financial purchases -- especially when major systems need to be replaced or additions need to be made.
That said, I've definitely bought my share properties that had to be gutted!
Kelly
Looking good! Lovely, lovely guest bedroom.
Wow.
I would like to be placed on the waiting list for this room :)
absolutely beautiful!
Thanks, guys. I am now opening it up as a bed and breakfast called One Bed, No Breakfast. I'm still working on the rates...
I love the canopy treatment. I would love to do that with our bed however I have 2 issues. 1 being our cat. He'd have a field day. 2nd being my boyfriend. He currently uses our canopy bed as a drying rack for his clothing! Boys! :)
lovely, lovely.
the rug really looks great with all the white, and i love the canopy.
dreamy...
ps--
saw your feature at better after!
:)
Thanks, Autumn! You'll NEVER believe what we scored that rug for -- TWENTY BUCKS! It's SO soft, too! And the previous owners had never even used it!
Very nice!! We have a small guest bedroom that could use some TLC, too (although thankfully it's not booger-colored).
BTW, saw these pictures made it on Better After! :)
Thanks, Amanda! Wasn't the color HORRIBLE? Ugh.
LOVE what you did with the bed. My little girl has a twin bed with smiliar lines. Think I might try this. Great remodel. Your guests will surely feel special.
Thank you, Angela! I was happy with the simplicity of it.
You should definitely give it a try. I think it would be lovely in a little girl's room. Let' me know how it turns out!
Oh wow, that is pretty much the exact green color that was on the walls of my house when I bought it! That bed is simply breathtaking. It's a pretty small room but you've made it seem huge!
Really, Amanda, the same green? What possesses people?!
And, thank you!
It looks beautiful! Love the canopy!
I'm a new follower!
I think it's more than "good enough." I think it's perfect! Love the bed!!
Beth.
