Beach Day

Double click on the photos to enlarge.

Ever since I came to Florida a decade ago, I've lived within a five minute jaunt of the beach. In South Florida, the beach and the Intercoastal Waterway are only a handful of blocks apart. I could feed a manatee from my dock one minute and be swimming with sea turtles and seaweed only moments later.

In Jacksonville, it's a completely different story. When we started house hunting, we realized pretty quickly that we had to make a choice. We were either going to be beach people or boat people.

We decided to be boat people.

While living off the river has it's perks, I'm a beach girl at heart. Though it's only a fifteen minute drive away, the process of throwing a towel over my shoulder and getting into a car just to feel the sand between my toes is something that I'm still not used to. And, truthfully, I don't particularly care for it. Putzing around in the salty air today has me contemplating a little one bedroom beach studio, or at the very least commuting in style.

The beach inspires me. Soothes me. Makes me feel young and old all at once.

There is no want or have or need by the ocean.

There is just listen.

Jealous of your need to only grab a towel. Here you have to grab a poly or down-filled snowjacket. Ok, there's no snow, but it's an unpredictable scene, our beaches. Gorgeous with forests and rocks and islands (Google "Cannon Beach"). But alas, no sandy suntanning beaches. Unless you happen to get there on the 3 days a year when it's GORGEOUS. Maybe more then 3 days a year, but it's still iffy. And an hour away. Most of the time we leave for the coast with our fingers crossed. If it's bad? We get miserably cold and then eat clam chowder at Mo's. Wait. That's not soo bad. Though, I'm still white as a ghost from lack of sun. Your suntan will beat mine, ANY day.

That is the way I feel about the mountains. Just looking out my window and seeing the frosty peaks soothes my troubled heart.

Jessika, this is the only beach scene that I've ever known well, but I've always been curious about others. By the way, I grew up in the Midwest having only been to the Lake Of The Ozarks and Lake Michigan as a small child. The first beach I ever visited was in the south of France! And, yes, it was chilly!

L, I've always wanted to live near the mountains. I drove through Tennessee once and was completely in awe (though I'm sure that's different than your gorgeous Alaska mountains). Now that we're so much closer to Georgia we keep talking about a weekend of hiking up there...

My sister had a horrible time with this when she lived in St. Augustine but she's doing a little better since they moved to their new house in Jax. She is a definite beach person so St. John's did nothing for her. But now they are only about 20 minutes to the beach (and 2 minutes to the neighborhood pool) so she's adjusting much better. I simply love both bodies of water, though, and am happy to be wherever she drags me. Also? I really wish
Jenks would open a franchise in Lexington!

What is this Jenks, Allyson? Should I know about this? Tell me, tell me!

OMG the BEST pizza place EVER. One near St. Augustine and one in Jax. Probably more. Such freaking good pizza, though!

I'll be a beach person for you :) that's probably because I have always lived 5-6 hours from any beach. Thanks for my bday wishes. I thought you were around 26, so there :p

I'm THIRTY. Which, so far, is insanely better than my twenties.

That is soo good to hear! my twenties haven't been aweful, but I am ready to stop worrying about my skin. you know? You are so sweet to offer a free place to stay! You never know...I might take you up on that ;) One day I would love to talk with you about being an entreprenuer. You seem to really have it down! have a great day!

These pictures are beautiful - that sky alone is amazing. I wish we lived closer to the beach, but we have to throw the towel over our shoulder (and bags in the trunk), and after a 4 hour drive, we reach the Gulf. Jealous a bit? Maybe so.

Candace, the sky was SO BLUE. Not today, though! Today it's gray and rainy!

Oh, I agree, I agree, I agree. Went to La Jolla on Sunday, and was so happy. Just to feel small, and to listen.

I am so jealous that you only live a 20 minute car ride from the beach. I love water. I mean really, really, really love bodies of water. Lakes, rivers, swimming pools, the ocean...my dream would be to have a beachfront home. I think it is because I'm a Pisces - water sign? I don't know, but I love your pictures. They were gorgeous.

You're welcome to visit anytime, Miss Courtney! Would love to see you (and meet the future peanut)!

Word. Sometimes when I am having a bad day, going to see water makes it all OK.
