It looks like a sago palm-- specifically, a male polination cone. They develop these giant cones when they split. So one palm will for into a double-headed palm. But, they appear to have trimmed all the leaves off the palm. That's why it looks so funky monkey.
That is really really weird. We have a corpse flower in WI at the Mitchell Domes...so creepy and cool at the same time! It bloomed in 2008, never know when it will again.
Yup, Sago Palm... which isnt really a palm. That is indeed the pollen cone and all the leaves have been cut off unfortunately. As for it being the beginning of it forking....no. Just blooming.
In the eighties, I was a little kid who put together model buildings out of notebook paper and Scotch tape and spent days on end playing Monopoly with my best friend. What I've done over the last decade is pretty much the same thing. I began buying, renovating, and renting dozens of properties during Architecture school, where I mostly learned how to stay awake for six days straight.

Hm. It looks like something like that, right?
Start of a King Palm?
Ha! That's kind of amazing. My first thought was an ear of corn. But that could be because I'm from Nebraska...
it's an alien - you should report it to the authorities immediately! :P

AHA! That may be it!
I think Jessika is right... it looks like a palm with all the fronds chopped of so you can see its 'boy parts'
Just be glad it isn't that plant in Kew Gardens, London, that smells like a rotting corpse when it blooms :)
