Whirlwind

Hello, loves.

I'm back. Life has been something of a whirlwind this week, and the laptop has taken a backseat. But I'm around, just busy.

Been replacing stuff. Toilets. Electrical outlets. Air conditioning parts. Landscaping. Drywall.

Oh, and concrete roof tiles down South at The Little Blue House.

Also working on a kitchen redesign. We put an offer in on an amazing house. We'll call it The Lake House.

Not to be confused with The (recently lost) Beach House, which I can finally stomach showing to you. It's the very modest blue two story that's the second house in the video. The sand starts right around the area where you see those people walking.

It still hurts.

Let's not talk about it.

Back to The Lake House. The entire first floor needs to be completely reworked (such a surprise, I know), but, save the kitchen, it's definitely a dream house.

But boy oh boy that kitchen. It's a head shaker.

Anyway, the interior shutters in this photo (source?) are thoroughly inspiring me.

I can't stop thinking about them, maybe because they remind me of the really quaint, colorful, chippy ones I saw when we ventured past the older homes in Newport Beach. The rest of the picture I'm not so intrigued by, but those shutters are a definite yes. Yes yes yes yes yes.

But it doesn't really matter now. Well. Not right now, at least. Contract negotiations broke down yesterday, and it's a good thing, too, because Hurricane Irene is headed our way.

I have to prepare not only the homefront, but the properties in South Florida, all of which are near the ocean in evacuation zones.

Oh, and that. Evacuating. Six years ago, when we were pummeled with a slew of hurricanes that none of us were prepared for, people were waiting in ten hour gas station lines and siphoning fuel out of their boats just to make it to a place with electricity.

You can imagine what a good time that was.

But don't worry, I'm ready this time.

Not really, but I just had to share my new (old) find. A tomato red 1960s Coleman ice box that I'm kind of loving. I'm loading that baby up with fudgesicles and Blue Moon and all of the ingredients to make mile high s'mores.

That's called hurricane preparedness.

If Andrew doesn't approve I'll blame it on the this guy.

I'm in Central Fla - I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of you on the coast. I think we'll be ok. :) You're right, that kitchen is a head shaker!

PS- I remember those blasted hurricanes. By the time the last one was getting ready to slam us I prepped by purchasing ice cream and beer (I was beyond over it). Anyway - Thinking positive. :)

Aww. Hurricaines and Tropical Storms. No fun. A few years back when I went to stay in Florida for a month when Mimi was dying a tropical storm headed our way. It was crazy. The publix was packed with people buying stuff like it was Y2K, and folks in moms townhome community were preparing for the storms.

Her townhome was waterfront on the sound side, and all the residents had marks on their garages of where the water would come up to. I was hoping it wouldn't, but it came up about a foot and a half into the property, and after it was all said and done and the water had receded-there were all these crazy looking little sea insects. I don't know what the heck they were but they were disgusting! Everything had to be sprayed/cleaned though most of it had been moved since there was enough warning. She sold the property after Mimi passed away (her last days of hospice were at home, and every time mom passed the room she would remember not so pleasant times), so she doesn't have it anymore, but I can empathize with you getting properties ready for the storms!

Hope it passes quickly, or just moves away!

well I think I'm far enough inside SC that this will not be too awful for us, but man when I lived on the MD coast one year I remember getting hit directly -- it's always good to have extra gas in the garage.

Good luck and I hope you get the lake house, and I love those shutters too. I have been toying with the shutter idea for a while, they remind me of interior shutters I saw in France. Except that I'm going to make mine out of old louvered closet doors I think. lol

Last I checked Irene was expected to be farther off the coast so maybe we'll get lucky.

The shutters may look great but think about cleaning - grease gets everywhere. Just a thought.

Stay safe.

I'm heading to Amelia Island on Friday. Hopefully Irene doesn't ruin our plans.

Fudgecicles and beer are totally all you will need in case of a hurricane. What more could you possibly need?!

I love your hurricane kit! I've been sending emails to my dude to figure out what we need for our kit this weekend...and dog poop bags made it high on the list.
