Hopefully light on the poop.
Just to refresh your memory, here's what it originally looked like. It's a fairly large space with an attached sunroom and rooftop terrace.
It had beautiful bones, but the yellow was killing me. It had to go.
When I first began working on the design I'd already accumulated most of the pieces I wanted to use. I realized early on that this project was going to be very personal. I wanted not only a functional and comfortable space, but a room filled with things that we love, things that a little boy of ours might love, too. This was our focus, and as the plan developed it became less and less important if The Nursery actually looked the part of, well, a nursery.
Nearly everything was found at local estates or consignment shops or during our travels. I bought the ottoman online from a place in India. The little cowboy boots were Andrew's. The work above the crib is mine from years ago. You may recognize the pharmacy lamp from our old office. The little red stool is something I picked up a while back and was using in The Laundry Room. The only new piece of furniture is the Bloom Coco Stylewood Baby Bouncer (gifted from Andrew's parents), unless you count the new slipcover I bought for the rocker.
So what are your thoughts?
Not too shabby, right?

Without a doubt the best nursery I have ever seen. Just fabulicious! It's sweet without being "baby".
Love your non-nursery nursery. It looks really cozy and inviting. Just one question -- am I not seeing a changing table? You know, for when he's doing all that pooping? :)
Kelly, I'm pleased as punch, the room is delightful, made me smile, I am so excited for you guys and have enjoyed your journey online, thank you for sharing your pregnancy so wonderfully. xo
Oh my...it's amazing and perfect! I can hardly believe it. And you already have it all together! I still haven't finished either of my littles' nurseries...and I have two of them! Ack!
Katie, there is room for a changing table and dresser in the walk in closet (behind the mirrored door). But, actually, it's easier for me to maneuver dipes and squirmy infants on beds, so I'll probably go that route. I guess it will depend on what stealthy aim he has with Number One.
i loove the bed
memorieeeees...once while i was changing my daughter on the changing table she reached down and accidentally snagged the diaper with her finger and slung her crap all the way across the nursery.
Stuff like THAT needs its own scrapbook page, I think.
Kelly, it's beautiful. The bed, especially! And that giraffe just makes the space. I am excited for you!
And omg, Katy!!!
Love it! Just right for a baby boy!
I love this room, it's so clean and simple and not flashy. It's exactly how I thought you'd do it! Great job.
Ok, my favorite part is the bulldog art :D.
marc tetro, holly!
Awesome. If he made weird-little-brown-alien/dog art, I would totally buy it.
Still not sure that Frannie is actually a dog ;).
ha! i totally bet he does!
love it!
looks lived in and not theme-y (totally a word)
i want to move in to the nook area...so cozy... i need some lambies in my life.
It is a a very nice room, but may I inject just a little of the reality of having an infant or small child in you home?
for instance, you have a lovely rug on the floor. If it is a "good" rug, I would remove it from the room because babies vomit, throw things, spill things, and at some point will definitely have a diaper disaster that will spill on the rug.
You may have gone a bit too far in your decision not to make it a "baby" room. Infants are mesmerized by brightly colored bed lines, and crib mobiles fascinate them. If you do end up using the big bed as your changing table, be sure there is a waterproof pad between the linen and the mattress.
For the first few years of your child's life, he will drive what ends up in his room, and I'm pretty sure most of it will be baby/little kid stuff. There'll be time later to introduce your favorite things to him and to teach him about the things you love. For now make the room about easy, convenient, and kid-friendly.
I'm pretty sure you won't regret it.
Best.

The room is just perfect. I like how well it will obviously transition as he grows. We never had a changing table either for any of our three.
Have you two considered adopting a 51 year old?
Thanks, Mellodee. Hopefully he does drive what goes into this space since he certainly has so far!
You bring up some good tips. There are waterproof pads and, yes, the very nice rug can be vomited on. (We have four dogs so nothing we bring into our home is too precious.)
The room wasn't designed to look like a nursery, per se, but it was clearly put togehter to function like one. (Actually, the intended use is what drove our thoughts on colors and textures.) I absolutely think it's a "baby's room".
It's our baby's room.
yes, we hope so, sunny!
i'll probably get some mileage out of that bed while i'm nursing, too!
Love it! I'd somehow missed seeing that fabulous bookshelf nook in your earlier posts. It looks phenomenal!
Caroline, thank you! I can't believe it's "finished" (well, mostly), either...! The rest of the house, though? Notsomuch.
A room to grow into - it's perfect :)
What a wonderful room!
It's absolutely gorgeous! It's a nursery and a little man room! I love it!
A "little man room"... I love that, Lynett!
It really is perfection.
My baby boy had the style of crib that the bed is .. which I cannot remember what it is called but I love it!
The color is wonderful, the light is wonderful, I can see him one day, hanging out with his friends, lolling all over the bed, the floor, the chair .. when he is 5 and when he is 15 :)
me too, candice! (and the bed is an antique jenny lind. i love the cribs also.)
Hey Kelly, I love what you did with the room!! Could you tell me where you ordered the pouf from? I am looking for something similar for the nursery we are planning. Thanks for the inspiration!
Love the nursery. It looks very cozy. Congrats again!
Good old Ebay, BrickandBrack!
It turned out gorgeous Kelly! That nook/sunroom is amazing! What a lucky boy.
LOVE it! Especially the beautiful bed. I'm sure you will create many lovely memories in this space.
what a sweet comment, lauren... thank you... i hope to!
Gorgeous!! Love it's lack of "nursery-ness". Hope you have some black out shades at the ready for that sunroom!
the curtains are backed with a blackout fabric that blocks out ninety something percent of the light.
love 'em.
Could you place come to my house? I need major help.
if only this belly traveled well, kelly!
I love it! And I love that it has the space for another bed, too. I think that would be a wonderful thing to have.
This space has so much character and charm.
It's gorgeous!
Kelly,
It's ridiculously awesome. I really love your taste.
My only regret in my first babies room was not having a table next to my ugly old nursing chair. Sometimes you need a place to put all the crap that goes with breast feeding. Sure a boob is really all you need but in the beginning it goes S-L-O-W. You may log some serious time in that chair so you may want a place to put a big glass of water, your laptop, burp rags, etc. That's the only thing I would add if this room was in my house. And I would probably make you find said table since I am loving the relaxed feel of your style!

you know, sara, i've been thinking about that. even something little like the blue table by the bedside would do for my laptop (i think i can get by with the window sills for drinks and things). maybe i should get one of those adjustable laptop desk sorta tray thingies that moves? that way i could use it wherever i nurse in the house, too...
I have to tell you, that I L-O-V-E LOVE this! I really appreciate the fact that it’s not all bought from Pottery Barn Kids and set up like every-other-nursery. It’s totally perfect, special and unique…just like you. :) I’m thrilled for you guys.
aw, thanks, angie. by the way, you look STUNNING in your engagement photos! that red dress! you look like a model.
This is my favorite nursery ever! I love that you have a bed in there. So smart. Also great details, and I love that it still looks like a sophisticated and grown-up room. I don't really like the nurseries that are heavy on the themes and so many bright colors. :)
thank you, kristi!
What a perfect space!
I'm really late to this post but I just wanted to say your nursery is so very beautiful. Its personal, peaceful, and thoughtful. What a wonderful place for your little guy.
thanks, jen! (your nursery has always been one of my favs.)
It is an absolutely beautiful room. Your back will thank you if you get a change table at waist height. Changing diapers on a bed just kills the back.
Beautiful room! Do you mind sharing the paint color?
it's martha stewart whetstone gray in satin. it's sort of light and fresh with a cooler undertone. the trim is behr bright white.
